This is college

I never cease to go to bed after midnight. My usual sleepy time has ended up being after 1. Sometimes it’s been after two. Even though I feel like I don’t have tthat much to do, I uess I do. It’s just a lot of seeral different simple things. for my classes and for my personal stuff. The time just flies right out the window. Oh well, I don’t wake up until 8:30 everday, so it isn’t too bad.

I always do some work, take several breaks by checking tumblr and my email, comment something on facebook, write up an article for the Daily Trojan, and then study some more. This is the college life.

I kinda want 8 hours of sleep though.

The Poetics of Loss

It’s my favorite class for this semester. Actually, this entire school year. It’s a GE5 (also known as arts and letters) class. Usually people have tons of reading and papers, but my class isn’t like that. We read poetry about loss and recovery. The reading is not only light, but enjoyable. The class really makes me think about life. It makes me appreciate what I have.

Every time I leave that class, I feel enlightened, emotional drained, and content. It’s like a huge therapy session disguised as a college course. I love my profesor, the kids in that class, just everything about it.

I got my first paper back today. I got my first ‘A’ on a college paper. Felt fantastic. He talked about the poems we will be writing in the next couple of weeks. It sounds wonderful. He laughed when he talked about his grading techniques. As long as I do the work and put my heart and soul into things, I’ll get an A. That’s the beauty of having an artistic/emotional class. You can’t really grade that.

I was meant to take this class. It’s something I really need in order to grow as a person.

Mapping out my future

Trying to map out what I want to do for the next three years of college sort of got me all confused. Not too badly, but I’m hoping I can do what I want. I’m going to try to minor in photography as I major in print and digital journalism. I was looking at all the requirements for each and I think I can fit it all in. Hopefully. There’s a part of me that wants to fit in a hip-hop dance class somewhere as an elective. That’s just a crazy thought my friend and I had though. Don’t know if I’d actually do it.

It’ll be fun, stressful and exciting to see how the next few years play out.

What a great night

The Trojan Dance Marathon was a much needed event. Sure, I could have stayed in, studied for my midterms and been productive, but no. I went out and had fun. A blast really!

My friend Chris went with me to that wonderful event. I initially planned on only staying for like an hour or two, especially to see my friends’ band, The Beat Advocate, to perform. We ended up staying for like four hours. Man, we’ll be feeling the pain in our legs in the morning. haha.

There were some cool DJs, especially the last one we saw. We were going crazy. haha. It was great to finally get to a dance party. At one point it was kinda awkward because while we were doing our thing, some people from band found us. Some awkward, we only know how to fist pump, pelvic thrust and party boy, people. We eventually got away.

Another great part about the whole event was that it was for a great cause. All the money was being donated to LA’s Children’s Hospital. Some of the young survivors were there to speak, and one even sang! She was so great, like a future Broadway star. (she so happens to already have two albums out as well…and she’s like in middle school or younger haha). In between dancing, they shared touching stories and really raised awareness. Felt like crying at some points. It’s 2am, they still have an hour left of the event. Too bad they didn’t do it twice or more a year. I would go. haha. I love the shirt I bought as well.

What a great night.

And the day got that much better

While my entire afternoon was just a nice day wasted inside my dorm room. The evening was fun. Went to Tommy’s Place (this cool underground venue at USC) to see a couple friends and to watch a few bands. Ended up bringing Barbara, Caitlin, Hayley, Chris, and Ortal along :) May I add (specifically towards Caitlin): Mission accomplished. She knows what  mean :)

I have to say, Tommy’s Place is such a rad venue. It’s small, but that’s what makes it cool. It’s like a hidden treasure. During the day, if you didn’t know it was there, you wouldn’t think it even existed. It’s just a random normal looking door. At night, DPS is there and a little rope for a line get puts out. Then you walk down a bunch of stairs and BAM, it’s a kick ass bar and concert venue.

I think it was my third time being there for a show (which are always free). Other times had been for USC football watching with the flute section. They have super comfy couches there. But anyway, saw Scott Hoying and MEGG perform. Pretty awesome.

All-in-all, fun and successful night. Besides the awesome music, one of the best parts is seeing my Pop Music major friends. It’s my goal to hang out with them more since I kinda lacked on that last semester. whoops =/

These are the kind of days I love

Today was just all kinds of amazing. It’s been great having my friend Ryan crash in my room the past couple of days. He’s here auditoning for USC’s music school and listening to him play has been awesome. Live entertainment for free? Hell yeah. He really is a talented guy and I hope he gets in because having him here would be sweet.

Besides that, today was like one big Grammy Camp reunion. Other kids I know from camp are also here auditioning. Ryan, Justin, Brandon, Sarah, Danny, India, Katie and I all met up and chilled for a couple hours. Justin, Sarah Brandon and I are all students already. Danny, Ryan, and Katie (oh and Ryan’s friend Dan) are all high school seniors and the India is a junior in high school(she’s a beast on the drum set). It was great to be around so many talented people. I love hearing them talk about music.

After that, I went to play in basketball band for the USC v CAL game. We lost by two points, but oh well. It was fun.

The past couple of hours, I had a long conversation about Ryan’s big plans, talked to Sam (which was at like 2:30am his time), and then helped Ry decide on which songs to audition with. lol.

Tomorrow should be fun as well. I need to find time to finish my homework though…lol

Day 15: Thoughts on…

Education

I think it’s really important to get an education. I’m a college student at USC. It’s a great private school. I’ve learned a lot already and it’sonly my second semester. College is different from high school. There may still be a lot of work, but the topics are interesting and I feel like not only am I enriching my mind, but I’m enriching my inner self. It’s true.

I also think that having an education can really help people obtain jobs. It gives them a slight edge against everyone else who is struggling in this economy.

All in all. What would we do without our A,B,Cs and 1,2,3s?

Sounds like a productive/fun Saturday

This morning I was woken up by the vibrating of my phone on my desk. It was Sam wishing me a good morning and a Happy 20 months, so I didn’t mind at all. It was almost ten in the morning anyway. I hate sleeping super later because I feel like I’m wasting the hours of a day. 10/10:30 is usually my limit unless I’m beat tired.

Anyway, the rest of my day shall consist of studying for my upcoming midterms, playing with the pep band for a bit at the 12-hour Dance Marathon, a fundraiser for LA’s Children’s Hospital, then more studying, more convos with Sam, and then I will return to the Dance Marathon for fun to watch my friend’s band, The Beat Advocate, perform. Might as well go dance it up as well. Might even donate money to the cause and receive a t-shirt.

Back to high school

Starting last week (on Mondays and Thursdays), USC has been having two-day “Explore USC” events, which is when high school students from everywhere can take tours, learn about the school, and go to scholarship interviews on the second day. They are also given the choice to stay in the dorms and eat in the dining hall. How? USC students could volunteer to host the students. Rachel, my roommate, was one of those HS students last year, so she decided to host this year.

She finally has a kid today. She’s a pretty nice high school senior. The floor will be her bed tonight. I like her though and I don’t fear that she’s going to jack my stuff so that’s always swell. lol.
